My First Time Trying Home Balayage and it was So EASY

I spent $250 on bad salon cut and color and vowed never again. I thought I couldn't do much worse at home. It was worth a shot to try.
I got the light blonde Light Set and started the process as soon as it arrived at my door. I watched a bunch of how-tos on youtube and in the end I give myself a B+ for my inaugural effort.
Like some other first-timers, the top of my head is a little blotchy. My side part made that final sectioning a little tricky. Next time I'll pull further from the part before adding the color, and really make sure I do a very sharp angle with the product.
Overall the Light Set far exceeded my expectations. I've sent photos of my color to everyone I know and they're blown away. They can't believe I did it myself.

The first color wasn't exactly what I wanted. Esalon adjusted my formula so the next colour batch was more what I was hoping for. I have already recommended eSalon to friends.

I'm south Asian with Dark brown hair and have been desperate for highlights for over a year. I didn't want to pay ridiculous amounts to go to a salon and was ecstatic when I came across this. I got my sister to brush them on as I wear glasses and can't see without them, and she found the process very straightforward. The only negative is that the smell of the mixture is quite strong and It triggered a migraine which I had for the rest of the day. Nonetheless, when I washed it out, I couldn't contain my excitement at seeing dark blonde highlights. The toning was straightforward and I couldn't stop smiling everytime I looked in the mirror.

I added highlights to blend with the highlights in my extensions. At first they did not seem like light enough but when I went out in the sun after a few days, they looked beautiful. I definitely would take smaller pieces to highlight so it looked a little more less chunky but that was on me.

Shade is perfect however the color fades rather quickly and because my hair is so fine and I only wash it once a week it fades rather quickly.

The only reason i cant give them the full 5 stars is that the timing on the directions is way off. I leave this on for 8 to 10 minutes and have distinct highlights. The color or the highlights us beautiful and my hair isnt damaged.

I’ve been using this product for a few years and it’s easy to do, takes about an hour. It barely lasts 4 weeks as I do have quite a bit of gray to cover. Wish it lasted a good 6 weeks. I use the color wash and camo spray for my part and temples to extend color coverage when I don’t have time to color.

I’ve had professional blonde balayage highlights on my light/medium brown base for ages. Due to COVID, I haven’t been to the salon in almost a year! So I decided to just do a drugstore box dye in “chestnut brown” about a month ago to cover greys. It ended up turning my hair a very very dark reddish brown. The color was also flat and kind of blah. I decided to attempt at-home balayage with Light Set in medium/dark blonde, knowing the highlights would likely turn out more on the caramel/auburn side, which I was fine with. After watching the how-to videos on the site and several YouTube tutorials, along with the written step-by-step eSalon provided, I felt pretty confident applying the bleach even as an amateur. The results are absolutely spot on! I love the depth and dimension Light Set provided. And my hair feels even healthier than before which is amazing and unexpected! Would definitely recommend for those wanting to take on diy highlights at home and will use again for sure!

This was the first time I've ever used the light set. I found the application process more difficult than expected. The videos that illustrate it make it look simple, but I have curly hair and applying the highlighting mixture to thin strips of my clean hair (no styling products to keep it in check!) was a real challenge. Also, I found that the size of the strips needs to be wider on my curly hair: for application instructions to be truly personalised, they should take into consideration hair texture! Having said this, I'm delighted with the overall result.

I got compliments on my hair after using this and it was easy to use. My only issue was the way it continued to lighten over time. I'm not sure anything can be done about that.

I wish you would provide more tips for how to apply high lights for short layered hair. It is not easy to clip short hairs in sections for high light. eSalon video is not helpful with short hair.
I also suggest to offer a separate flat plate to go under hair for more clean application. This can be purchased separately and reuse each time?

It worked wonderfully.

First time DIY balayage highlights, the instructions are easy to follow, everything mixed well, I applied the toner but it's pretty brassy looking, I was expecting more of a dark blonde tint. I ordered the dark brunette kit.

Make sure to separate the hair you want to lighten in order to give good highlights don’t make the mistake some people make by lightning all of the hair and not having highlights.

once you get the mix to the right fluidity thickness it is easy to put on but you have to be fairly quick as it dries out quicker in warm weather. Easy to apply and the shimmering tone is just perfect

This was much harder than the basic colour as the colour itself is much thicker. A nervous first application of just a few strands made me realise the colour was excellent and it wasn't as hard as I thought. I do wish that it was possible to have a trial go first as highlights can be tricky. Anyway I got there and will do it better next time.

It is completely uneven, only colored the top section of my hair, and lightened it from darkest brown to like a blondish orange. I wanted subtle highlights. I can’t walk around like this until my next kit arrives. I contacted the colorists that contacted me and asked for a refund. I’ve now had to order two orders of my regular color and they haven’t responded about a refund for this. My regular color they sent me was beautiful and I should have left it.

I had a major issue with both the hair color and the highlights. The hair color did not take as the grays could be seen immediately after rinsing the hair color off then I tried applying the highlights the next day and they did not take. They did not work.

I followed the YouTube video but didn’t get great results. Later, I realized the written instructions were actually different. That’s on me for trusting the video, but I wanted to watch and make sure I understood everything before risking my hair. When I reached out to eSalon, they sent me more color (not another lightening kit to fix it) and advised me to touch up near my scalp. I followed those written directions exactly and ended up with brown hair again. I really wish they had sent a full new set along with better guidance on how to achieve the results I originally wanted.

So I tried the light set because it said the highlights were subtle. I look like I took straight peroxide and highlighted my hair circa 1992 when I was in middle school. I look a mess! Don’t do it.

It was bleach, the purple toner did nothing to tone down the orange. I followed all of the instructions and watched the video numerous times beforehand.

I would give it no stars. The shade was recommended to me by esalon but turned my hair basketball orange. They sent me a Demi color to cover which worked but took 5 days to rectify the problem.

I love the idea; I love the packaging. I am not so sure about the rest. I did order Medium to light blonde. I have orange/brassy hair on the top layer. I used everything exactly as directed from the easy-to-read instructions. I am now trying to fix this. My hair lady said she would charge me 300.00 for a color correction. I will not order again.

Overall things went as per usual, having done this before, but I ended up with an unsightly streak! I don’t know how this happened!
I’m not sure if I used too much product in one spot or left it on too long, but it just looks terrible. Unfortunately I don’t think there is a way to fix it except to dye my hair!

I had a disastrous outcome where my dark brown hair turned bright orange. I was unable to keep the highlights separated from my unhighlighted hair, and my stylist said that it’s hard to do on your own and she always has someone else do hers. My colorist uses foil to keep the highlighted hair chemicals away from the rest of the hair and something like that is needed here.

I’m not sure why I thought this would be straight bleach to give ultra light highlights but this was more of a low light and I’m not mad. It turned out classic and blended well. Just wish they were much lighter.

I have used esalon color every three weeks for the past 4 years and thought I would give light set a try. I watched the videos and read the instructions. I applied as directed and the indicated processing time, used the included shampoo and toner. The result? Orange highlights in my hair. Not the subtle highlights as advertised. The light set probably works for light brown and blond hair but not on medium brown hair or darker. I had to dye my hair a shade darker just to cover the orange when I fact I was wanting to go lighter, hence the trial of light set. It will take at least a year for the dark to grow out. To say the least, I am disappointed

I followed the instructions exactly but sadly I was left with various shades of burnt orange throughout my hair. The toner made no difference.

These highlights are just awful. I followed the instructions precisely and I got yellowish orange highlights. I look like a clown. The worst thing is this happened on a weekend. Phone support is only available during the week so I sent an email asking for help. I’ve had no response and this is the third weekday. So now I get to go to the salon and spend at least $150 to fix this disaster. So much for trying to save money by using esalon.

I have been using eSalon color for several years & have always been very pleased!!! However, I just tried the light set & was not at all satisfied. I followed the video instructions very carefully & felt I did everything as instructed. My highlights turned out very brassy & uneven. I would not recommend trying this product.

I followed directions to a tea and now I look like a brassy dope. I used the toner mask twice now and it is still horrific. I am so disappointed and embarrassed that I have brass streaks through my hair until they grow out. I could not be more disappointed right now

This is awful. Turned my hair orange . The toning mask did nothing and I ended up having no choice but to go to a professional who had to color correct my hair. It was a waste of money and time. I do not recommend.

Update: Esalon credited my account for the cost of the light set w/o me asking for that, so I do appreciate their practices as a business. Just wasn't happy with the results.
My hair is a level 6 brown and used the light to medium brunette kit. The highlights were very drastic, too light and almost orange. The toner didn't tone at all. Luckily I had an extra bottle of all over color to cover the highlights. Unfortunately as the color fades the highlights will show through. I would not recommend the light set.

This was very difficult to use. I have been really happy with the regular color so I thought I would try the light set. It didn’t mix up the way it was supposed to. It was very difficult to apply. It came out really brassy. Not something I will try again.

Okay I don’t even know where to begin.
I read the instructions and did as directed.
There is not enough activator to keep the lightener hydrated enough to keep on the hair. It just dries and is a powdery mess.
Application is poor due to the thick consistency. Which yields poor results.
I followed instructions, got assistance with application, and it is quite frankly awful.
Now have to go to the salon or to buy a box die to fix this awful mistake.
Save yourself the trouble, don’t buy this.

After dying my hair with a beautiful custom made brown from here i tried the light set! Regret this so much as will now have to go to the salon to fix the mess it caused. patchy orange strands, even though followed instructions and watch the video several times before applying. ! Would not recommend

Splotchy highlights

I am leaving 2 stars because I would have liked the highlights had they not turned out splotchy. Not as bad with the first few, but closer to the top layer there was huge splotches of hair that stayed brown in the sections that i attempted to highlight. I had to go to a salon to have my hair fixed. Apparently the splotchy parts were from the solution drying out too much before applying. I did mix it when it started to puff up per instructions so ... I don't know. I attempted to save money doing this at home and then spent almost $200 at the salon to fix it. Anyways, if you have no experience with highlighting your own hair, you may want to just have it done professionally.

Did not spread well

I'm not sure if I stirred it too long or not long enough bc it was very thick and hard to spread and came out patchy. My hair was lightened but my roots were bleached in some places. It looked real bad. Luckily I had a hair dye on hand in case I didn't like it so it was a relatively easy fix thank god.
